Art imitates life. Ballad, as a form of literature which is most close to daily life, is a vivid reflection of the folk custom. Fengmenglong is known for his "preaching of se ntiment". Shan’ge and Gua Zhi er is not only the depiction of the social life in the regi on of Wu during the late Ming period, but also fully demonstrated the theme of the "se ntiment".These ballads are the results of the rising civil literature in late Ming, show t he liberation and demand of the public toward human desire and provide a large numb er of materials for us to study the late Ming clothes and eating habits. Those ballads of“affair” which are defying the arranged marriage directly reflected the feelings and a wareness of the Late Ming female. They had the courage to pursue love, and awakene d the personal consciousness; correspond to the situation at that period.Current academic research of ballad mainly concentrated on its function of inherit ance the traditional cultural,especially the Oral literature. Systematic analysis on the s ocial custom the ballads implied seems lack. This article will focus on the text analysi s of "Shan’ge" and "Gua Zhi Er", presents the social custom of the region of Wu durin g the late Ming period, the proliferation of “affair”, folk religion, and the analysis of t he custom of curse and its language features.
