Peng Xiuwen, a renowned composer, conductor, and one of thefounders of the modern folk orchestra in contemporary China, made greatcontribution to the establishment and development of modern Chinese folkorchestra. In reference to western classic music in harmony, orchestration,music instrument, and formation of a band, he established a Chinese folkorchestra and was quoted as Peng Xiuwen Style, which was most typical inmid20thcentury in China. During the past40years around, he authoredand compiled more than400pieces of folk orchestral music and his way oforchestration has been highly complimented.Since the well-known folk music Er Quan Ying Yue (The Moon over aFountain) was created, it has been adapted into a variety of versions. Theversion adapted by Peng Xiuwen has a unique artistic value which is worthlearning. The writer of this paper made an in-depth research on theorchestration and band formation of Peng Xiuwen’s version of Er Quan YingYue with the aim of probing into the way of revitalizing traditional folk musicand advocating its core artistic value.
