“Two Springs Reflect the Moon”is an Erhu music created by a famousChinese folk musician Hua Yanjun (A Bin,1893–1950) in the20thCentaury. Thecharacteristic of this music is simple, natural, vigorous and forceful, which suits bothrefined and popular tastes; therefore it becomes a shining pearl in the Chinese folkmusic history. Since the first creation of“Two Springs Reflect the Moon”in1950, thismusic has been widely spread, performed and eventually it forms many performanceversions. In this thesis, it is going to analyze the most popular8versions of this music.The first one is from A Bing himself; the second one is conducted by Peng Xiuwen,performed by Wang guodong; the third version is the background music from themovie“Two Springs Reflect the Moon”; the forth one is from Liu tianhua’s discipleJiang fengzhi; the fifth one is from Min huifang; the sixth one is from Zhu changyao;the seventh is from Song fei; the eighth one if from Hu zhiping. As the composer andperformer, A bin’s version is the most valuable one, since other versions are all basedon his. However, the other7versions have represented different playing styles indifferent periods of times. Based upon A bin’s foundation, they have developed theirown performing style. Among those different versions of“Two Springs Reflect the Moon”, each one has its own merits in terms of musicalstructure、techniques、styles and aesthetic pursuit etc. Through the analysis andcomparison between these8different performance versions of“Two Springs Reflect the Moon” in this thesis, it can be seen that how these greatperformers developed their own techniques through continuous learning based onprevious people’s works and their passion, we have to learn their passion andcreativity of the music.
