Peng Xiuwen is not only a distinguished National Orchestra conductor in contemporaryChina, but also a high-yeild and prolific national music composer, whose works are widelypopular among people. Meanwhile, he has been working positively on the advocacy andpromotion of instruments reform, many results of which are largely popularized and appliedinthefieldofNationalMusicbothathomeandabroad.This thesis mainly analyzes the general characteristics of Peng Xiuwen's nationalorchestral creative works from the aspects of the application of melodic structures,developing skills, harmonies, and polyphonic techniques, musical forms and orchestrationmeans.In the aspect of melodic writing, PengXiuwen pursues the national character throughoutthe whole process. The early works are mostly pentatonic in the term of melodic structures,which maintain the national and regional features of the melody. The melodic developmentis based on the commonly used folk approches. The melody presents to be clear, smooth,natural, simple, and with rich local flavor. While his later works draw on the experience ofWestern professional composition techniques. The combintion of the two styles endows thesymbolic significance of the independent melody. And the works also show Peng Xiuwen'smore and more widely creative thinking. Gradually, he turn the melody writing from the"tentative"and"amateur"tothe"professional"direction.The application of harmonies and polyphonic techniques in his works mainlyincludes:1.the application of traditional harmonic language, 2. the harmonic application of non-thirdoverlays, 3. Heterophony,Polyphonic Imitation, Kanon,Comparison ofpolyphonytechnique,4.theapplicationofintegratedpolyphony.With respect to the musical structures, he mainly uses the followings: 1. the musicalstructures with the principle of representation, 2. Chinese folk music forms of the multi-stagestructures,3.mixedformstructures,4.symphonicdivertimentostructures.In addition, in the creating process of national orchestra, Peng Xiuwen has his uniquecharacteristics on the selection and application of the tone. Such as: 1, the application offeatured musical instruments, for instance, Guanzi, Alto Sheng, xylophone, 2. the applicationofspecialtone,forexample: (1).Stringedinstrumentplusmute,(2).highregisteredhuqinplustremblingbow,3.theapplicationoftonecompounds,4.reasonablelayoutofthetone.
