This paper takes the calligraphy data of Qin Dynasty unearthed in the twentieth Century (the Qin Bamboo and wooden slips) as the research object, and studies the evolution of Qin calligraphy. This paper summaries the newly unearthed materials of Qin calligraphy, and handles meticulous details from the aspects of writing technique, font and structure, style of shape and text order, in order to study the newly unearthed calligraphy style. Through the study of Qingchuan wooden slips, Yunmeng Shuihudi, Live Qin bamboo slips and bamboo slips collected in Yuelu Academy, this paper tries to outline the evolution of Qin calligraphy style from the middle and late Warring States period to Qin Dynasty. This paper makes the comparative study between calligraphy of the newly unearthed Qin bamboo slips and the calligraphy of the official fonts on inscription stele. It turns out that there is a subtle relation between the official fonts and traditional and popular calligraphy. They influence each other and achieve parallel development. Besides, the evolution of calligraphy of official fonts in Qin calligraphy and calligraphy of popular style of are consistent through analysis. Meanwhile, Qin bamboo script is the fast-written seal character. The calligraphy of Qin calligraphy is embedded in the historical category, and it inherits from the Zhou Dynasty, and then it is compared with the Chu calligraphy. The calligraphy of Qin calligraphy is able to come down in one continuous line with calligraphy in Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang Dynasty, and achieves its specialty and advancement. Finally, the causes of evolution of the Qin calligraphy are discussed from the political culture background, materials, instruments and writing form.Chapter one outlines the unearthed data of Qin Dynasty since twentieth Century.Chapter two is the focus of this paper. It analyzes details of the strokes of the characters from the perspective of morphology, and it investigates style of writing, style of shape, style of ink and style of order, etc. with the method used in the appreciation of calligraphy style. The study on Yunmeng Shuihudi and Liye Qin bamboo slips are stated especially in details. It mainly discusses the following two aspects:one is the features of calligraphy in Qin calligraphy, including adjustable font, wrapped font and protected tip. These complicated writing styles make calligraphy ancient, plain, sophisticated and implicit. The other is the characteristic structure of the calligraphy in Qin calligraphy. The square structure, the introverted shape and the stipple in parallel and equidistant form create the aesthetic pursuit of sense of rationality.Chapter three and chapter four make a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the Qin calligraphy. It places the perspective in history and studies the inheritance from Xi Zhou Dynasty calligraphy, influence and parallel development with the official fonts on inscription stele of the Qin calligraphy, and influences on calligraphy of Qin calligraphy from oriental countries especially Chu calligraphy.Chapter five analyses the reasons of evolution of the Qin calligraphy.
