ObjectiveThe theory of opening, closing, declining and rising of qi is similar to the Yin-yang theory, but much more dynamic and concrete. According to two opposite movements and their corresponding results, life activities and pathological phenomena of the body are divided into different stages. With it, we can better understand the connection between different symptoms. This paper takes the common digestive symptoms for instance (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal fullness, epigastric stuffiness), and analyzes the relationship between each other, and looks for the regulation of the classical prescription to the symptoms, using the theory of opening, closing, declining and rising of qi.MethodTo further study common digestive symptoms, this paper mainly induces the original text, adopts statistics methods, refers to annotators’interpretations and combines with western medicine theory. In the aspect of statistical methods, this paper counts the accompanying symptoms, accompanying pulse and the frequency of herbs used, and uses the support and confidence to analyze the correlation between symptoms and herbs, and also uses SAS clustering analysis to cluster the symptoms in the original text. This paper emphatically analyzes the original texts related to common digestive symptoms, from the viewpoint of the theory of opening, closing, declining and rising of qi.ResultThrough the dendrogram of SAS clustering analysis, we can see that the symptoms’ distribution is mainly in accordance with the distribution of opening, closing, declining and rising. If the dendrogram is divided into two categories, it is nearly that closing and rising of one kind, opening and declining of the other kind. If it is divided into four categories, it nearly accords to closing, rising, opening and declining.Vomiting approximately belongs to opening. According to the specific circumstances, it can be mainly divided into the following stages:1) Opening appropriately and fully, thus the body tends to heal by itself.2) Opening but not fully. Doctors should comply with the trend, applying prescriptions such as Zhizishengjiangchi decoction.3) Opening but not by the right means. Doctors should restore the gastrointestinal movement, applying prescriptions such as Gegen adding Banxia decoction, Xiaobanxia decoction, Wuling decoction, Dahuanggancao decoction.4) Opening without gaining enough, thus recycle again. Doctors should strengthen body resistance and relieve depression, applying prescriptions such as Banxiaxiexin decoction, Xiaochaihu decoction, Guizhi decoction.5) Declining, even with pathogenic factors. Doctors should strengthen body resistance and eliminate pathogenic factors, applying prescriptions such as Dabanxia decoction, Wuzhuyu decoction.6) Opening too much, thus begin to decline. Doctors should revive yangqi for resuscitation, applying prescriptions such as Sini decoction.7) Opening too much, the body is difficult to restore and towards death.Diarrhea approximately belongs to opening as well. According to the specific circumstances, it can be mainly divided into the following stages:1) Opening appropriately and fully, thus the body tends to heal by itself.2) Opening but not fully. Doctors should comply with the trend, applying prescriptions such as Chengqi decoction, Shizao decoction. 3) Opening but not its right way. Doctors should clear away heat, applying prescriptions such as Gegenqinlian decoction, Baitouweng decoction.4) Opening without gaining enough, thus recycle again. Doctors should strengthen body resistance and relieve depression, applying prescriptions such as Banxiaxiexin decoction, Xiaochaihu decoction.5) Opening too much and begin to decline, even with excessive pathogenic factors. Doctors should strengthen body resistance and eliminate pathogenic factors, applying prescriptions such as Sini decoction, Zhenwu decoction, Zhuling decoction.6) Opening too much, and unable to stop. Doctors should quench the trend, applying prescriptions such as Chishizhiyuyuliang decoction.7) After opening, the body is about to restore, but sometimes above the excess.8) Opening too much, the body is difficult to restore and towards death.Abdominal fullness approximately belongs to rising. According to the specific circumstances, it can be mainly divided into the following stages:1) Rising with excessive pathogenic factors. Doctors should eliminate pathogenic factors, applying prescriptions such as Chengqi decoction, Jijiaolihuang pill.2) Rising with heat. Doctors should clear away heat, applying prescriptions such as Baihu decoction, Zhizihoupo decoction.3) Yangqi is insufficient, and about to rise. Doctors should combine strengthening and attacking the body together, applying prescriptions such as Houposhengjiangbanxia Gancaorenshen decoction. 4) Yangqi is about to rise, but cannot maintain anymore. Doctors should strengthen the body, applying prescriptions such as Sini decoction.Epigastric stuffiness approximately belongs to rising. According to the specific circumstances, it can be mainly divided into the following stages:1) Rising with excessive pathogenic factors. Doctors should eliminate pathogenic factors, applying prescriptions such as Xiaobanxia decoction, Shizao decoction, Mufangji decoction.2) Rising with heat. Doctors should lead heat downwards, applying prescriptions such as Dahuanghuanglian Xiexin decoction.3) Yangqi is about to rise, but open without rising enough, thus recycle again. Doctors should combine strengthening and reliving the body together, applying prescriptions such as Banxiaxiexin decoction.4) Yangqi is rising. But as it opens frequently, it is about to be weaker. Doctors should strengthen the body, applying prescriptions such as Guizhirenshen decoction. In addition, based on the summary of the herbs used in digestive symptoms, we find out that although the symptoms are different, the herbs frequently used are not out of Shengjiang, Banxia, Dahuang, Huanglian, Zhishi, Houpo, Shaoyao, Ganjiang, Renshen, Fuzi. And at which stage the herbs are used in different symptoms are rather similar according to the the theory of opening, closing, declining and rising of qi.ConclusionBy analysis, we find out that symptoms are much related. Besides the locations they are related, they are also much related by stages. Furthermore, Zhang Zhongjing pay much attention to the trend of the body when making a prescription.
