Objectives:To explore the peculiarity of empathic deficits of the patients with schizophrenia. To discuss the correlation between TCM syndrome and empathy.Design:1.A scale for observation of TCM syndromes was formulated including TCM schizophrenia symptoms.2.Apply EQ, IRI, TAS, BEQ, ERQ and HCA to measure empathy state of each sample (general population sample and psychiatric sample).Results:1.Psychiatric sample:In 31 cases, the ratio of male to female is 5:1, with 83.9% male and 16.1% female. Average of age is 34.42±11.12, ranging from 18 to 59. General population sample:In 34 cases, the ratio of male to female is 7.5:1, with 88.2%male and 11.8% female. Average of age is 33.91±9.52, ranging from 18 to 56.2.(1)The schizophrenia group scored significantly lower than the normal group both on EC score and EC+PC score (P<0.05). (2)The schizophrenia group scored significantly higher than the normal group on F1 score, F2 score, F3 score and total TAS score(P<0.05). (3)The schizophrenia group scored significantly lower than the normal group on PEX score(P<0.05). (4)There were no significantly differences in total EQ score, total IRI score, total ERQ score and total HCA score of two groups(P>0.05).3.With application of statistics, four TCM syndromes criteria about schizophrenia were worked out:deficiency of heart yin, Liver flourishing, Chalice stagnation sputum, and Phlegm syndrome.4.Bivariate correlational analysis was used to explore the correlation between TCM syndrome and empathy. (1)Except deficiency of kidney yang, the other 9 TCM syndrome scores related positively to F1 score, especially the Liver flourishing syndrome. (2)Except deficiency of kidney yang, the other 9 TCM syndrome scores related positively to F2 score, especially the Chalice stagnation sputum syndrome. (3)The four TCM syndromes:Chalice stagnation sputum, Liver flourishing, deficiency of heart yin and Phlegm, all have positive correlation with F3 score. (4) Except deficiency of kidney yang, the other 9 TCM syndrome scores related positively to total TAS score, especially the Liver flourishing syndrome.Conclusions:1.Empathic deficits exist in schizophrenia. The empathic deficits refer to cognitive empathy and emotional empathy.2.(1)Liver flourishing is the principal pathogenic factor of alexithymia, and has a positive correlation with difficulty identifying and distinguishing between feelings and bodily sensations. (2)Chalice stagnation sputum is the principal pathogenic factor of difficulty describing feelings. (3)Deficiency of heart yin is related positively to externally oriented thinking.3.Deficiency of heart yin, Liver flourishing, Chalice stagnation sputum and Phlegm syndrome are the main TCM pathogenic factor of schizophrenia.
