Traffic data investigation refers to the process of collecting the traffic volume and the related traffic phenomenon on the road in an objective way, and then analyzing the data obtained thus understanding and making reasonable judgments for the traffic condition. The traffic phenomenon mentioned above is a kind of complex phenomenon with wide scope and it changes as time varies, therefore it is very difficult to give a comprehensive description. The traffic data investigation can only be conducted at limited place (region) and limited time to objectively seek for those data that are related to the concrete countermeasure. Along with the rapid development of china's society and economy, demand on road traffic development and transportation management is increasing gradually. Meanwhile level of traffic service is becoming higher and higher day by day. To fulfill these we require the accuracy of dynamic traffic data collection and the efficiency of information network. Moreover immediate response to the real time traffic information and its changing sequence will be able to assist the corresponding road construction design and the consummation traffic control management decision plan for the future traffic demand. In order to achieve these, we have to conduct related traffic data mining and study widely, deeply, consistently and accurately. There are several ways of gathering dynamic traffic data. Infrared, microwave, ultrasonic and video frequency are the most advanced technologies up to date. Among the ultrasonic technologies, ultrasonic wave examination technology has been widely used for a long time. It has a number of advantages: safe, reliable, high precision, operational and easy maintenance. The Internet technology is developing rapidly and mature, which makes it possible to classify and assemble data gathered from different areas, different regions with the Intenet. This system achieves traffic information sharing in three steps. Firstly, the data of traffic flow is gathered with the ultrasonic technology in many representative points. Secondly, the data is uploaded to the centralized server at ministry of communications via Internet from various remote places. Finally, the server consolidates the data and shares it to the public. Starting from the demand, this article elaborates the ultrasonic wave examination principle. We propose an architecture that combines computer control technology and remote data transmission for road traffic management. We carry on the elaboration from two aspects: data gathering and remote data transmission. Besides the elaboration, we discuss and describe some drawbacks of the system and propose some improvement methods accordingly. Data collection was originally using supersonic pulse echo rule, i.e. the sound impedance rate of ultrasonic wave has the reflection principle at different medium contact surface. The supersonic head with receiving and sending in one launches supersonic pulse vertically to road surface by a certain time-gap. When vehicles pass through supersonic head the supersonic wave transmitted to the ground is being blocked. The supersonic head then receives signal echoed by the vehicle top. This signal triggers the supersonic transmission circuit, which causes to the head launching next sound pulse. This process repeats and thus creates a pulse series. As a result we can accomplish the detecting and recording on traffic volume by analyzing and processing echo signal of the following electric circuit. Data analysis is using computer software to perform back-staged analysis and calculation of the traffic data collected from observation station. In detail the software draws the three-dimensional graphs and match them with those stored in database to distinguish vehicle types. With the statistics and classifications generated, it is able to visualize an object, which is a great advantage for traffic data studies. Long-distance data transmission and exchange make use of WAN (Wide Area Network), FTP and TCP/IP agreement to gather traffic volume data and thus accomplish real-time transmission. The ultrasonic technology has been applied in gathering dynamic stream of vehicleinformation and the Internet technology has been applied in remote data transmission in solving the problem of information exchange among various area and regions. Thus, webelieve this architecture is applicable in many similar areas.
