Active detection systems, such as radar and sonar, have encountered more and more threaten in modern electronic warfare and information warfare. As the complement of active detection system, passive location and tracking system, which uses electromagnetic wave emitted by target, has proved its merits of self-hiding and far-distance detecting and can be widely used in many applications.Due to its slow speed and low accuracy in location, the traditional single observer passive location and tracking technology has proved itself hard to meet the demand of tactics. It is urgent to discover a new location system and technology. Recently, quite a few new technologies have been proposed to meet the increasing demands for fast and high-accuracy target location. Among them, the technology utilizing phase difference rate-of-change and Doppler rate-of-change information of emitter proves to be most potential , while there is still much researching work left to be done. The work in this paper is performed around the key problems of single airborne observer passive location and tracking system. The location principle, observability conditions, the location model, location and tracking algorithms are studied extensively in each chapter. In chapter 2, the basic principle and observability for target location utilizing phase difference rate-of-change and Doppler rate-of-change information of emitter is discussed. Chapter 3 studies the scheme of the passive location and tracking system using single airborne observer and the corresponding measurement and state models are deduced. In chapter 4, a instantaneous location method using single airborne observer is studied, the rules of geometrical dilution of precision, as well as the e ffect o f o bservation noise onlocation error a re d isscussed. The results are meaningful to the design and application of the location system. Chapter 5 studies the passive location and tracking algorithms whose performance is simultaneously compared. To sum up, this paper studies the key problems in single observer passive location and tracking system, some simulation results and methods can be widely and directly applied into engineering.
