In electronic countermeasure, passive location and tracking systems are playing a vital part because the fact that it works "quietly" without emitting any signals that possibly expose self to attack of some kind. Recent years, it gets more and more military regards. Among various applications, single observer passive location and tracking system are becoming to naval ships due to the fact that it has excellent maneuverability. In the research of passive location and tracking systems, we are easy to get the time of arrival and the direction of arrival of radar pulse as measuring values, Using the two measuring values, the target can be located by the passive location algorithm in this paper.First background and current situation in location and tracking are briefly introduced. Then we begin the research of passive location algorithm. In this paper, we mainly use weighted least square emulation and adaptive Kalman filtering algorithm. The result of simulation demonstrates that the algorithm has high location precision. But with the increase of radial distance, the precision of location decline distinctly, even it is not convergence. And the result are strongly depend on initial value. For overcoming its shortcomings, the algorithm has been improved. The improvements include two parts. One part is the use of recursive least square algorithm. The other part is the use of the L filter. With the use of L filter, we get good smoothness.Basis on the request of the algorithm, we design a hardware system and use the TMS320C6201 DSP as the system processor.
