A Web-based Expert System for Engineering Application of Fatigue and Fracture Theory was developed in this paper. Its essential function is to apply the theory of fatigue and fracture to the design and analysis of several typical engineering components, and obtain the comprehensive appraised result in the end. The main task of the system is to assess assembled vats, pressure vessels and rotation components by using COD and J-integral theory, and to assess large casting and forging components by FATT theory.A great deal of knowledge, experience, and methods for these typical engineering components' design are collected, and knowledge bases, data bases are built respectively. A data base management system is also established in the system. The system includes a general inference engine and a set of track and explanation mechanism, which guarantee the inferring process visible and the inferred conclusion convincible. In addition, the system has a comparatively reliable expanded interface, which can assist user to add new components to the ES. Therefore, the ES is an open system, which can be expanded and enlarged through modifying and filling the databases. It has a natural and friendly interface, which can be easily operated. A help service on the line is also provided. The whole system is a B/S prototype with a nicer interactive interface. Programming technologies of Microsoft Visual Studio.net are adopted for program actualizing. This makes it convenient for debugging, maintenance and transplanting.
