With the rapid development of communication industry, mobile telephones have become an integral part of our life, which demands a better function in this field. The quantity of mobile facilities like telephones have already surpassed that of PCs since a long time ago, and Internet has become an indispensable medium for communication in both business and non-business activities. Meanwhile, mobile telecom carriers all around the world are progressing ambitiously towards 3G broadband wireless net, making it inevitable to surf the Internet with wireless facilities like mobile telephones. As a result, J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), a coherent application and development environment open to mobile telephones are attracting broad attention. Since December 2003, I have experienced more than one year's research and development work of J2ME, in which period I also undertook a mobile office system cooperated by Computer Department, Sichuan University and Southwestern Branch of Yiyang Information Communication Co., taking part in the development of Network Management Index and Map Query system. Through this development work, I familiarized myself with the platform, tool and technology of mobile program development, and improved in both theory and practice by applying this knowledge into the practical work. Finished in that combined process, this thesis is aimed to introduce J2ME as a whole, including the design and development process of systems, and advice for improvement. It is organized as follows: Chapter 1 introduces the basic concept, system and construction of J2ME, and its related critical regulations, such as MIDP and CLDC. Then it describes the life cycle and development flow of a mobile application, taking the simplest MIDP application (MIDlet) as example. Chapter 2 is on the whole design, module division, and concrete application flow of the Network Management Index and Map Query system of this mobile office system. Chapter 3 chooses the most representative example in the development of client application -the main query interface of the Network Management Index Query system, to introduce its application program and design method. With the example, a series of development groupware of the client development tools is also discussed, like LWT of Motorola. Chapter 4 discusses some critical technologies used in the development, such as the development of Servlet, the connection of JDBC database and the employment of AWT components, taking the development of server program of the Network Management Index Query system for instance. Chapter 5 analyzes problems and suggests improvements, as in fields like network session, network transmission for Chinese, query function's enlargement, multithreading matters, and security matters of J2ME. Chapter 6 summarizes the thesis.
