As we know, the news media has the reputation of the fourth power in the United States. Whenever we get the information passed by the media, we could almost feel the pulse of an democratic country. The American media played an important role in the Vietnam war and thus became a legend of that time.To our surprise, they had no great achievements after that. In a series of war report, the American media just keep their mouth close. Someone says that the journalistic freedom has died in the United States, someone says no.It is not that important for us to draw a certain conclusion. What I want to make clear here is whether the First Amendments to the Constitution still has influence on the news circle and the government. To make things clear, it is necessary for us to understand the definition of journalistic freedom first. In my paper, I try to discuss the contents of the freedom and the factors which help to keep its vitality. After that, a special period was put forward as a special example, the war period. Only under such environment could we tell the reliability of the freedom. From all the examples I have, we could see that sometimes the freedom would win , sometimes may fail, but it would never perish. With this belief, I try to give some reasonable explanations to the unusual behavior of American news media and prove that the journalistic freedom still exist in the United States. Anyway, with the first amendments in hands, they would always be safe.
