With dramatic development of Internet technology, Web applications have drawn wider attention than ever before, nevertheless, low maintainability and reusability, and inflexibility are very common phenomena in We.b applications. Consequently, hierarchical designing, the framework of each sub-tier, and selection of development technology become more and more important with complexity of requirement analysis, constraints of R&D time cycle, and requirements of system stability, extensibility and maintainability. This dissertation focuses on techniques of Web application development based on the experience gained in development of China Unicom Sichuan Branch E-Commerce Platform. The work presented in this thesis involves:1. Discussion on J2EE platform and its components.2. Brief discussion on the MVC pattern with an emphasis on the "Struts" framework, including its implementation issues such as component cooperation, based on a comparison between two typical patterns in Web application development.3. Analysis of a four-tier architecture based on J2EE platform and techniques of sub-tier development are provided as a background for selection of relevant techniques in the author's work.4. A framework of China Unicom Sichuan Branch E-Commerce Platform, in which the author has been involved, based on four-tier architecture, i.e. Web tier, business logic tier, data persistence tier, and database tier.5. Practice on unit testing (e. g. Web component and EJB component) and integration test is presented, which has shown that the system meets the design requirements both in functions and performance.6. Further improvement and optimization combined with other design patterns, such as Delegate pattern, Session Facade pattern, Service...
