Now, the Java 2 platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) provided by Sun Microsystems, Inc. has gradually become a standard of enterprise web application development. J2EE is based on the technology of component and has an n-tier architecture. It provides an integrated, object-oriented, maintainable and expandable application architecture in wide fields and a mighty development platform for web application. While the web applications become larger and larger, and their processes become more complicated, the demand of system stability, expansibility and maintainability increases. In order to shorten the developing cycle and enhance the efficiency, during the development of the n-tier project, the developers will not do everything from the very beginning themselves but actively search for the reusable design and code. Therefore, more of them start to use frameworks. Among these frameworks, Jakarta-Struts is currently a more popular one for developing enterprise web applications. This thesis takes a project named "Support Pack System" which the author participated in as the background. Then from the methodological angle, a detail analysis and research is made on the source of the Struts framework, analyzing its internal structure, performing procedure and the design patterns it used. Based on that, an improvement is made on the architecture of the Support Pack system. Secondly, through the source analyses, the thesis summarizes the extension points in the Struts framework .Aimed at the use of Struts, the thesis points out some extension and improvement of it. Finally, on the basis of the above analysis, some personal opinions on developing and choosing framework are provided.
