The rapid development and the gradual integration of Internet technology and mobile communication technology has made it a consensus that IP protocol will become the uniform network platform. People are eager to utilize the mobile terminal devices on hand to access the Internet and enjoy the equivalent service just like a fixed one. To meet such demands, mobile IP technology has come into being and now is the focus of researches. Despite the great success of the current mobile IP technology based on IPv4, the mobile IPv4 technology can hardly be world-widely popular for its intrinsic limitations. Now the successful research of IPv6 in placing of IPv4 has brought about unprecedented opportunity for the development of mobile IP technology. Under such conditions, the thorough research of mobile IPv6 has been conducted in this thesis. The research works concerned in this thesis can be generalized as follows:1. The address architecture of IPv6 protocol, the type and format of extend header, neighbor discovery protocol and the automatic configuration mechanism of IP address are thoroughly analyzed. The modification and extension of original IPv6 in the mobile IPv6(MIPv6) protocol is presented and the principle of achieving MIPv6 communication between mobile node, correspondent node and home agent is also expatiated in detail.2. As to the safety problems of the two kinds of binding update in mobile IPv6, the corresponding solutions are described as follows: the safety of the binding update between mobile node and home agent is ensured by IPSec protocol, while the binding update between mobile node and correspondent node is safeguarded by the key of binding management acquired from the return routability procedure.3. The module design of achieving MIPv6 protocol in mobile node, correspondent node and home agent is achieved and the relevant definition of function interfaces and the program flow are presented as well.
