This paper focuses on the designing of a next-generation MPEG-4 player based on EM8500, which is a MPEG-4 decoder chip. Comparing with traditional VCD player (Based on MPEG-1 standard) and DVD player (Based on MPEG-2 standard), this MPEG-4 player has more functions and gives more vivid image and sound. The finished player has very friendly GUI (Graphical user interface). It gets media files through a USB2.0 interface from PC to its 20GB 1.8 inches mini hard disk. It has many video outputs and audio outputs, and it has direct outputs to monitors, TV sets and projectors because of its unique DVI/HDCP. Its unique MPEG-4 decoder is compatible with MPEG-2 standard, so it almost support all the media formats. It's a next-generation MPEG-4 player, a mp3 player and also a JPEG picture browser. In fact, this MPEG-4 player is a typical embedded system. The core of its hardware is a 32bit RISC ARM micro processor integrated a MPEG-2/4 decoder and an IDE controller. On the other hand, its software is base on an embedded operation system--uClinux and a graphical system--Microwindows. The whole system has a compact structure and perfect functions and can be called a next-generation player, leading the development of media players. I summarized my work as follows: 1.Porting uClinux to our specifically hardware platform 2.Porting Microwindows to our specifically hardware platform 3.Designed a suitable GUI for the MPEG-4 player 4.Finished the program to play media files...
