Study And Implementation Of Online Examination System Based On XML

With the development of the computer network technology and education on network, the traditional on-paper examination is no longer fit for the present situation. The online examination is replacing the traditional one little by little. The online examination can realize the separation of teaching and examination by using net to implement the processes of making examination papers, examining, and marking. This kind of examination decreases subjectivity to a certain extent as well as the amount of teachers' work. In addition, the item bank sharing is achieved through XML. The XML online is designed for the purpose mentioned above.Firstly, this paper analyzes the related theories of examination system. According to the characteristic of the on-line examination system, the paper sets up the thought that the item bank can be designed under the guidance of the Classical Test Theory (CTT) and with the combination with the Item Response Theory (IRT). It also analyzes the two factors affecting the quality of Item bank: the rate of test question coverage and the system of test question norm, puts forward that the system of test question norm is constructed on the basis of LOM criterion and discusses the scale of the item bank construction.Secondly, with the application of XML in examination, the paper introduces the technology of realizing the system: XML, SOL Server 2000, and ASP. In this paper, a requirement analysis and a general design about the online examination system are carried out with the guideline of software engineering. The requirement analysis mainly analyzes the functions of the examination system with data charts. The general design gives the introduction of the general structure of the system and of the function of the three user modules: administrator, teacher, and student.Thirdly, the paper analyzes the three important problems that have to be solved during the realization of XML online examination system.1) It introduces the concept of "virtual data source" and puts forward the scheme of heterogeneous item bank sharing based on XEDB; 2) It analyzes the seven restrictions which influence the quality of making papers, then divides them into three categories, i.e. strong, moderate, and weak, according to their restrictive force. During the process of making papers automatically, these restrictions will be treated respectively and therefore promote the efficiency of making papers; 3) It analyzes the technology of marking papers based upon XML, introduces the concept of Single Applicability in the inkling theory aiming at the subjective question marking so as to actualize the parameter dynamic and adjustable marking arithmetic with key words match as the main means and applicability match as the assistant.Lastly, the paper takes the course "The Basic Knowledge and Culture of Computer For College Students " as an example to construct the item bank and achieve the XML online examination system. This kind of examination system is universal and can be easily extended to other courses.
