Fiber grating is another important milestone in the history of optical fiber communication after erbium-doped fiber amplifier. With the improvement of fiber grating fabrication technology, fiber grating is one of the most promising and representative passive optical fiber devices. It makes many complicated all optical communication and sensing network into being, meanwhile, greatly extends applied realms of optical fiber technology. Thus, the studies on theory and application of fiber gratings become very important. In this paper we begin with Maxwell equations, found coupled-mode equations that describe fiber gratings, and compare two methods used to analyze nonuniform period fiber gratings, then analyze the characteristics of several kinds of fiber gratings. Furthermore, we provide two theoretical models for a new type of fiber grating—fluorescence fiber grating. Based on writing techniques of fiber gratings, we study the diffraction field produced by a phase mask, moreover, fiber Bragg gratings with high reflectivity are fabricated in the present experimental condition.
