In information age, the applications of network, digitalization and informationization are more and more extensive and deepen day by day. The multimedia technology is in an even more important position now. With the higher demand for the multimedia technology, They want video as well as sound, for instance videophone, videoconference, all sorts of real-time monitor systems, etc. So video capture technique is an important point and key prerequisite in these applications. Windows operating system supplies a few kinds of video capture techniques, which mainly includes Video for Windows based on MCI (Multimedia Control Interface) and DirectShow.In this thesis, the author mainly do study on the technical architecture of Video for Windows firstly, and it analyses the realized mechanism of its function module AVICap used for video capture. With its technique the author provide the workflow and key steps of realizing video capture. Based on research upwards, the author analyses the advantage and disadvantage of VFW. Then the author do more research on technical architecture of DirectShow based on COM. The author analyze the mechanism of video capture architecture of WDM (Windows Driver Model) and DirectShow in more detail to know about the principle of how DirectShow supports hardware and analyze the technical advantages of DirectShow. In the end, based on analysis of connecting process of filters in DirectShow, the author design a video capture tool with VC ++ under Windows operating system. The tool support video facilities of different interfaces or different drive models and can do real-time capture, video preview, compressed storage.
