With the development of the Rapid Prototyping &Manufacturing technology, the key technology of RP/M focuses on how to make the mechanical machine parts, which aimed at directly the functional part not the model, which results in the upsurge of the study on using metal materials as modeling materials and has a widely application foreground. It also brings forward a new method for manufacture of the mechanical part. The research contents in this paper are based on a NSFC project (Grant No. 50305009),which needs that the sheet metal is used as modeling materials for rapid manufacturing of metallic functional part, and the ultrasonic welding is used as the link method. In this paper, the objective and the value of the project are put forward and the slicing process of metallic functional part is studied based on ultrasonic welding . Whether the data model in STL files is correct can effect the realization of the following process. The transformation and the process of the CAD data model is introduced in this paper. The criteria to evaluate the validity of STL data model and the type of STL data model fault are analyzed in detail, the typical fault types are listed here. An automatic diagnosis method for the STL data model is presented. Final the method of how to read in the STL data which was kept in the special memory is also presented. Slice is the key in RP data translation. How to establish the relations among the triangles was studied in detailed in this paper, the construct the corresponding data structure, then it need search only three triangles which border upon with the current triangle in the slice processing. One closed contour line was received after one intersecting. This arithmetic saved more time than the old arithmetic. The visualization of STL model can help choice the best slice direction and check out the STL model. In this paper the OpenGL language was used to realize the rotate, translate and zoom function. The metal sheets were linked by the ultrasonic welding. For the heat stress can distribute uniformity, the distribution of the welding points were analyzed by MARC software in this paper, the offset arithmetic was presented in the end.
