While and the embedded applications proliferating at an amazing rate with no end in sight, the operating system is becoming the crucial part of the embedded system. But the requirements about the functions, performance, size, cost of embedded systems are various, so research and develop a general, configurable embedded real-time operating system to meet with the various requirements bears both significant theoretical and practical values.The configurable embedded operating system technologies are studied in the thesis, which is part of important research contents of the National Defence'sTenth Five-Year-Plan' Pre-Research Project: "Research and Applications of Embedded Real-Time Linux Technology". On the basis, we designed and developed prototype system of configurable embedded real-time Linux operating system.In this thesis, firstly introduced the conception and characters of the networked embedded system and analyzed the networked embedded system's key technologies. Then the paper defined the characteristics of the ideal embedded real-time operating system. After that, the paper compared the tailoring mechanism of some operating systems and discussed what should be done when developing a component-based operating system. These works provide the theoretical basis for the following design and development.Secondly, an analysis of the advantage, shortage and the ways to develop the embedded systems using Linux operating system is presented. Base on that, the paper gave a scheme to make a general and configurable embedded real-time operating system with Linux operating system. Using the system, the consumer can tailor the system according to the indeed requirement in order to save the system resource.Lastly, aiming at the shortcoming of configurable capability about Linux, the design and implementation of the prototype system of configurable embedded real-time Linux are given in the paper. Then the ways to enhance real-time and more configurable capability of Linux kernel are discussed.
