Chinese scholars have already commenced studying visual culture, since "pictureturn" was brought forward by western scholars. But at present, it is scarcely investigatedfrom the view of communication. The photograph is an important type of communicatingcontent in the mass communication and the study from the view of communication is ofgreat significance. This essay argues the communication effect of Photograph. The occurrence of communication effect is based on the features of photograph self.The formation of photograph can be regarded as a course of unilateral communicationbetween reality scene and camera. At the same time, the photographer endows the scenewith some meaning. The photograph communication consists of a series of factors,involving communication environment, disseminator, content, medium, audience, andso on. The photograph communication effect results from the multi-action ofthose factors. That can be called the general occurrence mechanism ofphotograph communication effect. Both the general photograph communication effect to individual and the integratedeffect to the whole society and human being are discussed in this essay, including theknowledge of environment information, visual enjoyment, construction of dominating valueconcept, image democracy, actualization of simulacrum and visual literacy.
