Optical switch is a component that can switch or make on/off light way in the optical communication networks. It is used to perform routing selection, wavelength selection, optical cross connection and self-healing protection in optical networks. The control and driving circuits of the optical switch is one of the key parts of the optical switch device. Based on the analysis of the characteristic of the polymer thermo-optic switch and the state table of the thermo-optic switch matrix, a new type of the control and driving circuits which enhanced the efficiency of the matrix was designed in this thesis. The important applications of the control and driving circuits of the optical switch are introduced, a general overview of the latest progress is present, and the performances, advantages and disadvantages of different control and driving circuits are analyzed and compared, and a new type of the control and driving circuits which based on the single chip and CPLD was designed.According to the request of the optical switch, the design of the units of the circuits and the assignment of the function of the units were introduced, the component parameters of the circuits were designed, the selection of the components and the produce of the circuits were described. The units were designed and the circuits was assembled and tested. The parameters of the units of the circuits were tested and analyzed. The experiments show that the response speed of the circuits was in the range of microsecond order, which indicated that the circuits grants the features of fast response speed, fewer components, high compactness, and easiness of produce and assembly and the circuits was up to the mustard.
