Optical switches are not only key devices in optical interconnection, but also one of the important elements that affect the performance of All Optical Network. Research work on the polymeric thermo-optical switches matrix (TSM) depending on the advantages of polymer's properties, is thus of crucial significance. This thesis emphasized on the analysis, simulation and optimization of the performance and structure of TSM. For the first time, a method using functional approximation theory of B-spline to realize the optimization of S-shaped bend of arbitrary boundary condition was set forth. Two methods of improving crosstalk of intersection were also put forward. Concrete equations to calculate the values of various parameters of intersection waveguide were deduced firstly. TSM of 1×8 and 4×4 were acquired and their performance were analyzed. Contents of this thesis are listed below: Firstly, computer aided methods —BPM (Beam Propagation Method) was discussed in detail. The mechanism of Y-branch was simulated in detail using BPM for the first time.The steps of designing single mode waveguide were described.Secondly, S-shaped bends which were used widely in TSM were elaborated. A comparison among different methods to realize S-bends was conducted. For the first time, the method using B-spline to optimize S-bends was set forth.Then, another important element of switch matrix —intersection waveguide was discussed. Two methods to reduce the crosstalk of intersection were researched and concrete equations were obtained to determine all parameters of intersection for the first time.Finally, on the basis of the elaborate research on the different elements of TSM, 1×8 and 4×4 TSM were got and their performance were simulated and optimized. The mask of 8 Y-branchs was also designed.Following the development of integrated optical devices, the chip which integrated several optical devices together (such as AWG, optical switch and attenuator, etc) was produced by many larger communication companies. S-shaped bends and intersections are essential elements to realize the interconnection on one chip and directly influence the size and density of integration. Thorough research on them is thus of great significance. As the complexity of optical devices improving, to grasp the computer aided ways of them is important to realize batch-bulk and industrialization of integrated optical devices.
