In twenty-first century, with the developing of Internet and the wide use of notebook PC and handset, people are eager to contact Internet at anytime and anyplace. The demand of market and the establishment of IEEE802.11 standards lead the local area network to be wireless. WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) not only has high communication speed, but also has many other advantages. Users can contact Internet at anytime they wish and users can move from one place to another within WLAN. WLAN is easy to build, easy to manage and WLAN is cheaper than wired one. Users can get in or out WLAN quickly and easily. For short time use, WLAN is a better choice than wired one. The IEEE802.11 serial standards have given a complete solution for WLAN and are accepted by market. IEEE802.11 WLAN is now widely used around the world. The IEEE802.11 serial standards define five different kinds of physical layer. The communication speed has been increased to 11Mbps from 1Mbps/2Mbps, and then increased to 54Mbps. But the media access layer of WLAN has little change. The development of WLAN needs not only speed, but also a more reasonable structure and strong management functions. To support multimedia uses, WLAN also needs more management functions.Firstly, the thesis introduces some basic concepts of WLAN. The second chapter designs a solution for WLAN acess point, including hardware platform and software system. The structure of IEEE802.11 WLAN is analysed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter analyses the management functions of WLAN and then the flows of management frames. After introduction of the concept of MIB (Management Information Base), the fifth chapter designs and implements a method to deal with the management information. The sixth chapter firstly studies the structure of management frames, then analyses the methods of implementation of management functions, finally implements these management functions.
