The rapid growth of multimedia communication use demands an expansion the present transmission capacity. The development of 10 Gigabit Ethernet is an effective solution to meet the demand. As the most important standard for backbone communication networks, SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) has also been wildly used.As one of the key components of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and SDH/SONET, serializer must handle high-frequency signals whose frequencies are half of the data rate (10-Gb/s). A 4:1 serializer operates at 10-Gb/s was developed, which can be used in both 10 Gigabit Ethernet and SDH STM-64.Tree-type structure decreases the speed of most modules, which makes design easier, and decreases the power consumption. Improved tree-type structure was used in 2:1 serializing unit. The difference between the phases enter the 2-bit selector is adjusted by D-Latches, which makes the circuit work reliably, and has larger phase margin. To enlarge the bandwidth of high 2-bit selector, shunt peaking technology was used.Design method of system and modules was discussed in the paper. Simulation and testing results were provided. The chip was fabricated in TSMC 0.18-μm CMOS process. Output data speed of the chip is up to 10-Gb/s with 1.8 V supply voltage. Die area equals 1.4×1 mm2. Power consumption of the chip equals 300 mW, lower than that of the same kinds of circuits. This project was supported by Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China, and has been approved by the experts.
