Urban planning oriented 3D spatial information system(SIS) is a professional 3D-SIS whose main application field is urban planning. This paper presents a professional solution targeted at urban planning based on the common framework of SIS.This paper summarizes the concept of SIS, 3D-SIS and urban planning etc, It focuses on the introduction of three subsystems, which are about the retrieval and management of 3D spatial information and city simulation based on 3D spatial information respectively. In order to retrieve the 3D spatial information rapidly and accurately, we adopt the related software developed by ourselves which is built on the technologies of 3D shaping based on the modification of polygon topologies, image-based modeling and landform texture modeling. In the aspect of spatial information management, the data structure is implemented according to the node structure of VRML which is stored in an object-relation mixed mode and accessed by the spatial octree indices. The city simulation subsystem is built on the 3D spatial information and can be used as a virtual simulation environment for the appraisal of urban layout design scheme. It can also provide related solutions to the problems in urban planning. Besides the above three subsystems, this paper also proposes methods to the visualization of huge data and rendering of shadows in urban planning.
