Due to their uniqueness and stability, fingerprints are used as main basis of personal identity. AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System), a technology of fingerprint identification using computer or high-powered MCU, is of convenience, high efficiency, security and reliability. It has been applied in many fields such as financial security, data encryption, electronic business etc and will play a more and more important role in our life. This paper is about the study and design of AFIS. According to the process of design, the system can be divided into three components: (1) the collection of fingerprint; (2) the processing of fingerprint image including pre-processing, feature extraction and matching of fingerprints; (3) the transmission of data.To meet the needs of modern technique and system realization, the structure of the system is designed properly and the devices in the system are selected carefully. More over, both the cost and the quality are also considered. The main hardware of the system consists of DSP (Data Signal Processor) TMS320VC5402 of TI and CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device) EPM7128SLC84 of ALTERA Base on the above hardware, this system achieves four main functions as following: (1) gathering fingerprint image by solid fingerprint sensor MBF200 of FUJITSU; (2) compiling initialization program, fingerprint gathering program, data transmitting program with VC54x DSP C language; recomposing and optimizing fingerprint identification program and debugging all software; (3) using UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) MAX3111E of MAXIM realizes asynchronously serial data transmission between computer and embedded system; (4) using flash SST39VF400A of SST stores program codes and implementing offline system by "Boot Loader" method.Integral notion of system design is brought out at the beginning of the paper. Afterwards, detail technical information of module design is narrated in each chapter. At last, some problems encountered in system debugging and method how to solve them are brought out, and some suggestions for system optimization are also provided. The studies prove this embeddedsystem is reasonable, and has the advantages of easy operation, high speed and low cost. This paper provides some valuable references for the design of processing system based on DSP.
