Recently, with the emerging of various video content services, the video server becomes its central device by means of the high capacity storage and the strong ability of video processing. At the same time, the perfect software system of video server is becoming the key that makes good use of the hardware of video server. At present, video service providers spend lots of time in collecting material for video program in different places, which becomes the bottleneck for some video program with effective time. Also, the effective management for the material of video program is absent.Under the above mentioned background, this thesis presents to develop a video server supporting system. The system provides a solution of collecting the material for video program in different places and managing them. Also, we study the efficiency and reliableness of collecting material for video program in different places, as well as its management, and expound the design and implementation of the system.Firstly, we introduce the background of the system development, the current state of media streaming and the software system of video server. And, we provide the current state and demands of video service providers in collecting the material for video program.Secondly, we design the system totally included system frame and its architecture. And we introduce the user, the hardware and software of the system.Thirdly, we study the non-real-time collecting of material for video program, and present a quick broken-point continuingly-uploading-file method based on buffer queue and FTP. The method is used in the system's FTP client, and improves the efficiency of uploading video file with large data.Fourthly, we discuss the real-time collecting of material for video program. We improve UDP by adding re-transfer and flow control mechanism. Thus, under the precondition of ensuring the transfer efficiency of UDP, we realize the reliable data transfer.Fifthly, we discuss the management of material for video program. We design the file-based search and management sub-system of material for video program and thecontent-based search sub-system of material for video program based on MPEG-7. The. both sub-systems reinforce each other, as such the needed material can be searched exactly and quickly from the great capacity storage of material for video program.Next, we introduce the implementation of some key techniques for the system. Then, we applied the system to collecting material for video program in TV station and got satisfactory results.Finally, we summarize the main contribution of the thesis, and discuss the further studies or problems to be improved. Also, we prospect the direction of the system evolution.
