With the rapid development of information technology,there are more and more high requirement for storage bandwidth and capacity. However, it is impossible for single disk to satisfy these requests, then, distributed network storage system has become an inevitable trend of storage technology.The communication performance is the one of primary factors which affect the performance of distributed storage system. User-level communication protocol can make full use of the hardware performance of high speed network, which can reduce the data-copy times and depress the software overhead, and can improve the bandwidth and latency remarkably, which provide a new way to improve the performance of the distributed storage system. Designing and implementing a light-weight communication library which caters for storage system improve both the communication performance and distributed computing performance, which can improve the entire performance of the storage system significantly.VI protocol is a light-weight user-level communication protocol which has been used in the cluster computing environment widely, which has approved its advantage compared to TCP/IP protocol practically. There are some similar projects which bring VI protocol to storage system, however, there is not an integrated system protocol up to now. VISA (Virtual Interface Storage Architecture) provides a new distributed storage system scheme based on VI protocol, which take full advantage of network RAID technology of our laboratory, based on domestic and overseas research, and have implement the system protocol on the Linux platform.In terms of the testing results of VISA system, the I/O performance has a significant improvement, which approve that the VI protocol can be used in the distributed storage system environment as the cluster computing.
