The measure of human is the basis of working environment and product design in relation to human factors. Head features are very important parameters which embody difference among human race. Even in the colony that people have same type head features, they are different individually. Measuring the head features so as to classify human makes it possible exploring the colony diversity of modern human, and could also provide reference for optimizing head-face equipment design.The trend of modern head-face equipments is becoming more and more complicated. It makes hard to design interface and increases their incompatibility. So achieving as much head feature data as possible seems to be very essential. Traditionally, the measure of human head-face only cares head width, head length or head circumference. However, it cannot meet modern requirements any more. Due to distinct head shape and head size, it is unreasonable to design head-face equipment referring to one single standard. So classifying human heads according to their various shapes and sizes turns out to be extremely necessary now.This thesis has studied 1192 male soldiers' head CT images. Techniques of contour extracting and fitting are applied in this thesis to complete 3-D modeling of those soldiers' heads. Then OpenGL graphic libraries are introduced to realize the 3-D visualization. In order to get enough information of those head models, head widths, head lengths, head heights, head surface areas and head volumes are measured and calculated. A method of obtaining "standard head", which could be achieved by average specific samples' head parameters, is proposed in this thesis. What's more, new concepts of head width-length index, head height-length index and head sizing factor are put forward so as to classify head models by their shape types and sizes scientifically.In order to manage such large quantities of head samples(every sample has 45-60 CT slices), and to achieve standard heads that meet requirements in short time, a database management system was developed. The system makes data sharing very convenient. In addition, with abundant functions, the system provides an excellent platform for optimizing head-face equipment design and for further human race research.
