With the development of computer graphics, there is a growing pursuit of realism in the virtual world such as the three dimensional animation and games. Realistic three dimensional head model can provide users with the more realistic experience. To quickly build the three dimensional head model, a reconstruction method using two orthogonal images—a frontal image and a profile image—is proposed. The reconstructed head model has advantages of strong sense of reality and fast speed, which can be widely used in the field of virtual simulation and can satisfy the needs of real-time and accuracy.Standard head model is the foundation of building a personalized 3d head model. The candied-3 model is improved and complemented to acquired the standard head model. Then the active shape model(ASM) and process of feature points acquisition in this paper is introduced. The process includes image preprocessing, the detection of the frontal and profile face, the building of the model and the matching of the model. The feature paints are selected combined with the distribution of FDP feature points in the MPEG-4.68 feature points and 35 feature points are automatically acquired from the frontal and profile images respectively by using the improved active shape model. The obtained feature points are matched with the vertexes of the standard head model. The specific head model is generated by deforming the standard head model globally and locally with the matched feature points. Finally, affine transformation is carried out on the profile image for image registration with the frontal image. The registered profile image is obtained by cylindrical projection and weighted fusion. The texture map is mapped on the specific head model to get a realistic head model The experimental results show that the positioned accuracy of the feature points by using the improved ASM is increased up to 13.1% compared with that by using the classical ASM. By using the proposed method, building the realistic head model with a wide range of viewing angle and rich depth information only needs about 1.2s.
