EPON (Ethernet over Passive Optical Network) is one new solution for optical fiber access network. It has a Point-to-Multipoint Architecture and provides Multi-Service basing on Ethernet. It combines the advantage of PON technology and Ethernet technology. With its feature of high bandwidth, low cost and being used and updated easily, EPON is the best solution for access network.It is very important to provide an effective network management system for EPON to assure more stable, effective and orderly servicing. EMS (Element Management System) is mainly in charge of managing and improving EPON performance, so it is one component which is very important in EPON system.This article focuses on the design and implementation of EMS, and the main contents are as follows:Introduce the structure of EPON, depict the demand of access network management, and analyze the difference of 3 broad-band access network management solutions. At last, according to the characters of EPON, one network management solution basing on SNMP is given.Do detailed introduction and discussion of SNMP; provide one SNMP programming solution by using SNMP++.Design the EMS with the function of configuration management,performance management,fault management and security management, and give the way for implementation.Test EMS on main functions, such as User Management, Topology Map Management, Interface Management, VLAN Management and Bandwidth Management. At last, analyze the testing.
