With quick improvement of process control, real-time data processing and management of the thermal system, more attention has been paid not only to the safety of power plants, but also to the economy of the whole system. Real-time economic analysis for thermal system has a significant influence on economic operation and energy saving of steam power plant. A configuration software tool based on graphical techniques for the performance analysis and optimization of thermal system is developed in this paper. The main features and realization method of the software are discussed in detail.VC++6.0 development which has friendly interfaces easily to use and expand, it provides powerful class libraries which is flexible to build different objects, ability to deal with real-time data, The graphics based configuration software is upon object-oriented technique and visual programming method. Object-oriented technique and visual programming method are analysised in the paper, and the main program codes for the software are also provided. The software developed can be used to configure a thermal system and as an example a 300MW unit of a steam turbine power plant is given in the paper. Combining the traditional heat balancing method with the modular approach, a general heater model is developed. It can simplify performance computation of modern thermal power system and it will be easy for us to configure the flow diagram and to monitor the system real time performance of complicated thermal power system. A comprehensive mathematical model for real-time thermal economic analysis of thermal system is set up in the paper, and it can be used to analysis the on-line economic performance of units.Using object-oriented based visualization techniques, a class library for typical components and modules of the thermal powersystem is included, which can be applied to configure the flow diagram of steam power plant system and to monitor the real-time performance of the thermal system and to provide system operation optimization. The software developed may also be used to simulate the performance of different types of boiler and steam turbine unit in power plant.
