As a new type optical fiber, because of its particular optical property, photonic crystal fibers (PCF) developed so rapidly that PCF has been a focus in optical fiber field in recent years. Some scientists predict that it will be a center for next generation of optical communication.This paper introduced the development of PCF and mainly discussed the electromagnetic theory of PCF and finite-element mathematical model. Using the finite element method, PCF's characteristic parameters was calculated and simulated. The characteristics were analyzed, including modal field distribution, effective refractive index of fundamental mode, normalized frequency, material dispersion, mode field area and numerical aperture etc. Then high nonlinear PCF was researched and its characteristic was also analyzed.Through deep research for PCF, tapered PCF and PCF with layered compound structure were designed uniquely. The paper provided their design models. Their optical characteristics were discussed through theoretical analysis, computer simulation. Finally the conclusion was drawn.
