As a new type optical fiber, because of its particular optical property, photonic crystal fibers (PCF) developed so rapidly that PCF has been a focus in optical fiber field in recent years. Some scientists predict that it will be a center for next generation of optical communication.This paper is introduced the development of PCF and mainly discussed the electromagnetic theory of PCF and Galerkin finite-element mathematical model. Using the finite element method, PCPs characteristic parameters was calculated and simulated. The characteristics were analyzed, including modal field distribution, effective refractive index of fundamental mode, normalized frequency, material dispersion, mode field area and numerical aperture etc. Through the research of PCF, we show the designed model of TIR-PCF. Their optical characteristics were discussed through theoretical analysis, computes simulation. Finally the conclusion was drawn.
