The aim of this thesis is to measure the main performance metrics of various network flows and the traffic of various network flows of local area network. This thesis provides dependable measure data of these performance metrics for many network applications and adds many functions that current network test equipment and test software don't have. In this thesis two flow-based network performance metrics and flow-based network traffic are defined, related measurement program are developed, the measurement data are analyzed. In details, three aspects of this thesis are shown in the following.(1)IP network performance metrics frame are analyzed; the method of defining flow-based network performance metrics are studied; Two network performance metrics and flow-based network traffic are defined in details, these two metrics are flow-based network round-trip delay, flow-based network round-trip loss, at the same time the detail measurement and the method of the analyses of error and uncertain of measuring the two metrics and flow-based network traffic are studied. (2)The measure program of the two main flow-based network performance metrics and local network flow-based traffic are developed, customers can select network flow parameters and measure the two metrics and local network traffic of their defined network flows with these programs. (3)The measure results of the main two performance metrics and local network flow-based traffic are analyzed. Flow-based traffic of local area network is analyzed in detail and its characteristic is got. A local area flow-based traffic analyses program is developed,in this programm the measure data of flow-based network traffic is analyzed wi the defining of self-similar, and the conclusion that local area network flow-based traffic is self-similar is reached.
