Polarization Mode Dispersion(PMD) has been becoming the main restriction problem for the development of optical fiber communication. If this problem can not be eliminated, the transmission of pi-sec degree high rate will be restricted. Although modern fiber's PMD is not so serious, it will still be the important restrict factor for the high speed transmission in the optical fiber. Especially for the optical fiber under using, when the transmission rate get to 10 Gbit/s and beyond, PMD has been the most serious limiting factor.Firstly, the cause of PMD is analyzed. There are many factors coursing PMD, such as surrounding, setting, coupling and so on. This paper detail the cause of PMD and example several mathematic model that have been used.Secondly, the measurement technology of PMD is analyzed in detail in time field and frequency field. These methods are the Jones Matrix Eigen-analysis Method, the Wavelength-Scanning with Extreme Counting Method, the Principal State of Polarization Method, Poincare Sphere Method, the Interferometric Method, the Wavelength Scanning with Fast Fourier Transform Method, and POTDR Method.Thirdly, the compensation technology of PMD is studied, which is the base of restrainning the PMD in optical fiber communication system.Finally, PMD simulation technology is analyzed and summarized. Simulation is a irituitionistic method for understanding PMD,and the emulator is one important aspect in research of PMD. PMD emulators can also be used in the PMD compensators. According to the structure principles, PMD emulators can be divide into six kinds in this paper. By Monte-Carlo simulation, the numerical value simulation of two kinds of PMD emulator are provided.
