With the development of optical fiber communication, in which the bit rate and capacity have been increasing rapidly in these years, the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) become more and more important and cannot be ignored when the transmission system is up to 10Gbit/s or above. However, it is very difficult to compensate the PMD effect because of its stochastic feature. The impact of PMD on high-speed data transmission and the key technologies of PMD compensation are the topics in this thesis. First, a summary of the relating concepts of PMD and its statistics nature was given in chapter 2, which are the fundamentals for farther discussion. Second, in chapter 3, an expression of PMD-induced pulse broadening was derived based on principal state polarization (PSP), which is the description for first-order PMD; then discussed the deterioration of receiver's sensitivity caused by PMD and the effect of PMD on RF spectrum at the receiver; the experimental result was given for the latter. At last a method of extracting a PMD error signal for PMD compensation was put forward from above analysis and experimental results. The focus topic of this thesis is the PMD compensation (PMDC) technology. In chapter 4, we first presented the principle of first-order PMDC and a general model of PMDC; then described each sub-modal, respectively, and gave a summary and comparison of present main PMD compensation or mitigation methods; PMDC in WDM and soliton system were also discussed at last. In chapter 5, we described a first-order PMD compensator in detail, gave the designing principles and the methods of all parts in the PMD compensator, whereafter, the experiment on 10Gbit/s system was implemented. The experimental results showed that the PMD compensator we designed had a good performance for compensating the PMD effect up to 50ps and even more. Finally, we discussed the improvement and future prospects of PMDC. To our knowledge, this is the first time for automatic PMD compensation in domestic researches in this field and we believe that this would be significant for predominating this technology by ourselves...
