With the development of the technology of the network communication, many developed countries have begun to research Underwater Acoustic Network. Due to the importance of our country, it is necessary to study the Underwater Acoustic Network for our country. In this paper, we first discuss the basic concept and the emphasis of the Underwater Acoustic Network, and then focus on the topology and the routing protocols. For the topology of the Underwater Acoustic Network, we introduce the two prominent distributed multi-hop topologies, and base on the analysis of the features of Underwater Acoustic Network, we choose the full distributed multi-hop as the topology of Underwater Acoustic Network. With regard to the muling protocols for Underwater Acoustic Network, We study and compare the two on-demand algorithms known as Ad Hoc On-Demand Vector Routing (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). To see how the features of each protocol affect their performance, we did a performance comparison using the implementations of the two protocols in OPNET.According to our simulations, in terms of a combined view of the metrics: throughput, control overhead, and average latency. DSR has less amount of control overhead and AODV has better performance in terms of throughput and average latency. From the simulation results we know each protocol has its own advantages and disadvantages, so none of them can be claimed as absolutely better than the other.
