This dissertation addresses itself on the intelligent fault diagnosis system (IFDS) based on fuzzy logic inference (FLI), with the principle of its construction and components, features, the methods of its establishment being investigated. On the basis of above, it investigates the problem of building up the IFDS for the cooling system of marine engine, by using MATLAB as the major tool for the whole procedure ranging from the building-up to the simulation.The dissertation consists of four chapters, i.e., Introduction, Basic theory for intelligent fault diagnose system, The IFDS based on fuzzy logic inference (FLI), and The FLI-based IFDS and its application simulation for the cooling system of marine engine.In Introduction, we summarize the fault diagnosis according to its development history, the major techniques, the state-of-art of IFDS, and the trends of IFDS. The trends of IFDS is emphasized in such respects like the combination of the deep knowledge and the shallow ones for the knowledge representation, the combination of fault diagnosis and some advanced techniques like the neural network, fuzzy logic inference, expert system for the knowledge acquisition, and the application of Virtual Reality and OOT (Object-oriented technology) in faultdiagnosis systems.In the part of the basic theory of intelligent fault diagnosis system, we mainly introduce the related concepts and the general construction of an IFDS. As far as the knowledge representation and acquisition for an IFDS are concerned, the deep and shallow representation, the direct acquisition, the interactive acquisition and acquisition via learning are discussed.In Chapter 3, we focus on the IFDS based on FLI. The necessary math principles such as fuzzy set, membership function and fuzzy logic are briefly introduced. Also, we analyze the FLI system and its features.In Chapter 4, we investigate the practical case of setting up an FLI-based IFDS for the cooling system of marine engine by applying the principles mentioned in the previous chapters.
