The ability of database management technology in information systems has achieved greater progress and access for vital materials online. In developing countries where computerization is becoming widely used, developments should be in the area of resource sharing and globalization of information access. In such a scenario, the library which stores vital information should provide the most appropriate information to its users anywhere and anytime. The emergency of the world wide web (WWW) in the early 1990's as a viable means for National and international sharing and re-use of educational materials fundamentally has changed our view of the way education and learning can be delivered. The sustained access of information today has been attributed to capabilities of the database management systems, which store information awaiting retrieval when it is needed. The management of a library as a database system has enabled the library systems to use computers rather than storing information in cards. Most libraries require students to go to the main physical library to get the services they need .As per the current increase of student population the congestion in libraries should be reduced. This project is based on ways of improving the services of the library to reflect the current development of information technology and enable users get better services. The project incorporates a multi-tier two level architecture that successfully avails itself to the needs of library and its users. It uses the current technologies like the ASP implemented on IIS to make the functions of the library be accomplished. The web architecture enhances services and brings them closer to the users. Client server architecture is implemented for daily transactions and administrative activities. The web application links to the SQL 2000 server as a database management system software to make the system functions be realized. Users can be get services online and also at the main library. This enables users to have prior knowledge before they go to pick the book and hence get it inform of a loan or read at the library. There are also digitized collections in which the leader can get the materials online and read other than going to the library. The MSCL library has made this possible by its automated systems, which work over the Internet. Some books with vital information can also be downloaded online. The users can be able to Search for the books available using the title, year published, author or ISBN. This wide use search criteria helps users to at least be able to know one aspect of books they need. The users can reserve the books online so that it can be set aside for them to collect it at their own convenient time. A person will know whether the book is there or not. A user can also be able to see his details online, and change some of them, which change frequently such as the emails. He can also be able to see which books he has borrowed and when they are supposed to be returned. The administrator can also add the new books online and delete records of students online. Students who had send requests for reservation can be deleted when they get the books. For the functions to work the relational database system based on the Entity Relationship model is used where by data is stored intables which are related to one another. The tables form a relation to one another so as to coordinate events taking place. The library system in cooperates digitized services for the users.Microsoft SQL server 2000 is the Database management system which is used to store the database. It works with Active server pages which has scripting engine. The ASP is used is incorporated with VBScript language which accesses data from the SQL by use of ODBC, ADO, OLE DB and Universal Data Access. The library system uses a dynamic principle in that a user can make changes online. Security is ensured for the web architecture and the server. Clients are validated by use of the passwords for services in library systems.
