Image enhancement is a common procedure in order to enhance the contrast, sharpen the edge and optimize the visual quality of the input image in image processing. The problems of image enhancement can be stated as filtering out impulse noise, smoothing out non-impulse noise, and enhancement edge enhancement are conflicting processes in applications.To solve this conflict, an image processing method based on fuzzy logic is introduced. The pixels of the input image are divided into several fuzzy sets where several operators are applied. Each operator is applied to the set where it can achieve good result. The total result is better than that of each operator. The design of this kind of system is much flexible than formal adaptive filters.Derived from this fuzzy image processing method, a improved approach for image enhancement is discussed in this paper-an adaptive image enhancement algorithm based on fuzzy edge judgment. This approach is based on fuzzy edge detection, and uses it to characterize the probability that the pixel is on an edge. Through this fuzzy edge judgment, the pixels are divided into 3 fuzzy sets: the salient edges area, the smooth area and area between the formal two. In each area, the probability used to decided the degree of the contrast enhancement and the smooth filtering. This approach can save most details of the original image while enhancing the edges and filtering the noise.Through the experiments, we show that the new approach for image enhancement can solve the conflict noise smoothing and edge enhancement preferable. Also it shows that the fuzzy image processing method is reasonable.
