Optical fiber sensor is one of the hot-spot subjects in the studying field of optical fiber measurement technology .The measurement system using this novel structure sensor can be called "all optics" hi measuring field .It is especially applicable in the inflammable and explosive environment. High precision and good innate safe character are needed in the measurement of oil tank multi-parameters such as liquid level and oil-water boundary. At present the usual methods of liquid level measurement is mostly based on the measurement and transmission of electrical signals, so it brings inflammable and explosive problems.According to measurement requirement under the special circumstance, the author of this paper presents the oil tank monitoring system based on the optical fiber technology. Compared with the traditional measurement system, it is more adaptable to inflammable and explosive occasions because of non-electricity on measuring spots. This research subject is both practical and theoretical on the aspects of feasibility of the technology and the blue future of application. It attaches great importance to improve the precision and feasibility of national oil tank parameter measuring system, the as time it is also beneficial towards the development of the non-communication industry.In this paper, an oil tank monitoring system that consists of the optical fiber liquid level meter, optical fiber grating temperature sensor and optical fiber overhead alarm equipment is formed through the optical fiber technology. This system enables the measuring process to avoid completely the electronic signals so as to attain the safety.In this paper, the author introduces in detail the principle, the features and the applying situation of the optical fiber technology, and highlights the principle and some features of optical fiber grating sensor, which is most rapidly developed nowadays in the field of optical fiber sensor. Consequently, the author presents the field-bus communication principle and its network structure ofRS485 field-bus, and then analyzes the dynamic data exchanges and OPC technology in the software development of measurement system. Due to its characteristics and requirement, the system can be divided into the data collecting layer, monitoring layer and administration layer, and the network is composed of Ethernet which is the upper network and RS485 network which is the lower network., The hardware and software design about the system is introduced in details.In the whole system, functions of automatic measurement, display, alarm, and print are realized, in which the modern management of oil tank zone is rooted. Characterized with the communication between people and machine more concise, constructer expanding more flexible and its high reliability, the system contains excellent property in current use and engineer popularization.
