Computer aided road design plays an important role for guarantee of design efficiency and project quality. The thesis introduces a DEM-Based Road Design System named RomanCAD. It absorbs the superiority from exist domestic and abroad commercial softwares and offers enhanced and perfect functionality. It combines the Intersection Point Method (IPM), Building Block Method (BBM) and many other design habits. Further more it supplies function of Plane-Vertical-Transect association design, which improves the design efficiency. Automatic and interactive earthwork preparation and plane cross design are also supplied. Compared with the existing software, RomanCAD possesses the advantages of various functions, flexible design process, and high efficiency. And in the jointing of plane design linetype, this thesis provides a compositive method. The sixty-four-dollar question in the computer aided road design is that traditional methods such as IPM, BBM didn't be combined smoothly. As a consequence, the creativity of a road designer was limited, and work efficiency could not be improved further more. So making improvement on the design algorithms and combining the traditional methods to provide the designers more free choices are very important. The thesis is organized as follows:Firstly, chapter 1 of this thesis introduces the main content and current status of the research on computer aided road design system as well as the primary research content and objectives of the thesis.According to the traditional experience and the national road design standard. Chapter 2 describes the general flow of road design. Furthermore, this chapter also introduces the road design flow applied in the RomanCAD system. The design methods and algorithms applied in computer aided road design system are presented in Chapter 3: draw-out algorithm of contour line, plane-design methods etc. We put highlight on the plane-design method and our improvement on this aspect.According the development of RomanCAD system, the design of framework and the design pattern applied in the system are presented in Chapter 4.In Chapter 5, we can see how the RomanCAD realizes the function of every system component. The system operation is also introduces. The final chapter summarizes the main results and makes conclusions of the thesis. Some future research work is also envisioned.
