There are more and more discussions that Virtual Reality technology uses in digital communities, such as digital city, digital campus, etc. In recent years, the combination of Virtual Reality technology and GIS (Geography Information System) have already become the key technologies of digital city. Virtual Reality and three-dimensional simulation are main form for digital community shows. With VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and JAVA, we can experience digital community glamour like on the spot in person in addition. Nowadays, Virtual Reality technology has a extensive application prospects, such as in long-distance education, science calculation, engineering, architecture, e-business, interactive amusement and art.The embryonic form of Virtual Reality System already appeared on later stage in the 1970s in the world. Compared with some developed countries, China has certain disparity in the technological field of Virtual Reality, but some universities and R&D institutions have already put into the research work in this field. From domestic and international research situation, the research of Virtual Reality System focuses on hardware interface, algorithm describing and picture process, etc. There is not much study in transformation from two-dimensional data to three-dimensional data; there is simple three-dimension show of the research of VRML more, combination with database supported few.The study subject of this thesis is that WEB-based interactive Virtual Reality System, carrying on research in two parts of theory and technology. This thesis devoted to study three-dimensional data stored in database, three-dimensional optimization, the corresponding algorithm of two-dimensional data and three-dimensional data and principle of interactive technical application of Virtual Reality with three-dimensional model at the theoretical research. The goal of technical research is to develop a set of interactive system based on Virtual Reality and WEB with the ordinary computer, namely create a real-time and lifelike virtual reality environment without special hardware equipment, and applies this environment to the interactive system like inquiring, thus to set up a kind of high-quality interactive visiting and inquiring system based on technology of a new generation Virtual Reality. The thesis has four parts, and the main content is as follows:Chapter one described the characteristic, the classification and current situation of Virtual Reality technology and Virtual Reality Modeling Language, analyzed the problems about it.Chapter two introduced the technologies used in the interactive Virtual Reality System, proposed systematic inquiring realization model of three-dimension based on VRML and systematic framework based on MVC. We chosen JAVA APPLET as the bridge joining VRML and database, solved the interaction problem of Virtual Reality System theoretically.Chapter three proved the feasibility of interactive model and systematic framework through the realization of the interactive virtual campus system, and expounded modeling, model optimized and communication mechanism.Chapter four discussed the problems existing in the current system, and explained the prospect of the interactive Virtual Reality System with two parts of current restrictions and development in the future.
