Xiao Qian actively took part in literary-artistic and journalistic world in 1930s and 40s with his own unique talent and charisma and made indelible contributions to Chinese modern literature and journalism. His unselfish spirit, earnest editing attitude, rich editing practice, unique editing experience and profound editing thought are still of important enlightening and practical significance to today's supplement editing.This article consists of four parts:Part one: Introduction. In Chinese newspaper supplement editing history, Xiao Qian is an eminent writer and supplement editor.Part two: Xiao Qian's editing achievements in 1930s. In 1931, Xiao Qian edited China In Brief, which had 8 publications altogether. He introduced Chinese modern writers and works to western readers by adopting special issues, which reflected his editing thought: "Taking root in motherland and looking forward to the world." From July to August in 1935, Xiao Qian edited TaKungPao, Small Parks which had 60 publication altogether. He improved artistic level of supplements from their positioning and page arrangement and made it an important position of Beijing school of literature. From September of 1935 to September of 1939, Xiao Qian edited TaKungPao, Literature and Art in Tianjin, Shanghai, and Hongkong. He raised the influence of supplements by adopting special column and periodicals and setting up TaKungPao scholarship of are and literature.Part Three: XiaoQian's supplement editing thought. This part discussed the following three aspects. I .Attaching great importance to social disseminating function of supplements. The supplements edited by Xiao Qian opened up space fornew literature, provided public opinion position for literature art and exerted culture and social functions. Xiao Qian was rooted in art and literature and kept an eye on age and society in his own unique way, which proved him a progressive editor. II. Trying to construct cultural brand. Xiao Qian laid great emphasis on the setting up of special columns and issues, which performs different functions and created nameplate "first" products, whereas he built a cozy mental and cultural environment for readers and met the aesthetic need of readers to the greatest degree. All this manifested his creative and nameplate conscious as an editor. III. Willing to be a literary baby sitter. In editing practice of supplements, Xiao Qian widely made friends with writers and helped new writers, which reflected his earnest dedication, his editing attitude of treating everyone equally without discrimination and his contributing moral character.Part four: Concluding remarks. Facing information age, today's editors of supplements should insist on progressing with age, reforming and creating, taking root in markets and looking forward to the world and try to be an outstanding editor who is good at editing and creating.
