A Study Of The Chaozhou Officials Recorded In The Complete Works Of Mr.Hou Cun--The Cultrual And Educational Development Of Chaozhou Region In The Nan Song Dynasty

This paper is a systematic study of the Chaozhou officials recorded in the Complete Works of Mr, Hou Cun based on the careful research of the related references. With the cultural and educational measures adopted by these Chaozhou officials as the thread, the paper is focused on the study of the cultural and educational situation of the Chaozhou region in Nan Song Dynasty. The paper is divided into three parts:The part 1, which is also the Chapter 1, discusses about the Nan Song Dynasty officials recorded in the Chaozhou Annals since Song and Yuan Dynasty, combs up the relations between Liu Kezhuang and Chaozhou, and explains the significance of the Complete Works of Mr. Hou Cun, with the recording of Chaozhou officials, for the study of the history and culture of Chaozhou in the Nan Song Dynasty.The part 2, consisting of Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, presents detailed study of the biographical data, office durations, job performance, and the exchanges with Liu Kezhuang of those Chaozhou officials recorded in the Complete Works of Mr. Hou Cun, with reference to the Chaozhou Annals since Nan Song Dynasty as well as other collected works in the same period. It is found that among the 38 Chaozhou officials recorded, there are as many as 11 officials who were relatives of Liu Kezhuang. Furthermore, the records of these Chaozhou officials, especially the low-level officials such as some judges, educational ministers, county magistrates were rarely recorded in the Chaozhou Annals, thus being an important complement to them.Based on the observation of the Chaozhou officials in the second part, the part 3, which is also Chapter 4, studies the cultural and educational development of the Chaozhou region in the Nan Song Dynasty from three aspects, namely, the official positions, the educational institutions, as well as the academic ideologies. Finally, the paper concludes with the important role played by the Chaozhou officials in its cultural and educational development in the Nan Song Dynasty.
