Along with the rise of 3D modeling technology and the emergence of virtual reality, a perfect working platform is provided for production designing and creation. Using the three dimension conception, designers can analyze and evaluate the feasibility and reliability of a designing plan through model simulatioa With the gradual maturity of the theory of 3D modeling, many excellent modeling technique and software are developed and their application area becomes wider and wider. However, for some reasons, there has been very few successful application of 3D technique in the area of mining design. Based on the valuable experience of the predecessors and the present situation existing in the area of 3D modeling, this paper makes a research of the technical difficulties in miningdesigning--the construction of mineral deposit model and the extraction of slices in any orientation,by making comprehensive use of many mathematical theories and methods, database and graphics processing technique and puts forward the theory of 3D modeling based on discrete algorithm.This paper concludes the following items: The mutual transform between the graphics data and attribute data of 3D model and database The theory of 3D modeling based on discrete algorithm and techniques dealing with bifurcation orebody The technique of model render based on OpenGL The theory and algorithm of model interaction and divisionAccording to these theories, the built model can be used to realize the visualization of production designing, extraction of slices in any orientation and production index calculations. This 3D modeling method overcomes the limitations of traditional algorithm which is extremely complicated, difficult in combination operation, hard to build the correct topologicai relation among data and solves a series of technical difficulties such as model interaction and division. Therefore it greatly facilitates and simplifies the construction and processing of 3D model.Based on the above mentioned theory and technique, a simulation system of mineral deposit 3Dmodel has been developed. This system can help to realize the scientific management of geological data and automatic construction and processing of mineral deposit model. Its operation is simple, drawing is correct and its calculating precision is very high. Therefore it has widespread adaptability. All these provide a new operating platform for the engineering designers. The result shows that this modeling method is high efficient and reasonable and has wide application prospect.
